I usually think of Spencer as my credit cards guy, because he is good at tracking the best credit cards for service members (and spouses.) This book has a slightly different focus. The Military Money Manual book is the right balance of easy-to-read while still covering all the things to set yourself up financially.
Who The Military Money Manual Is For
While this book could benefit anyone, it’s really aimed at people who are relatively new to the idea of financial independence. Spencer defines financial independence as when your “assets and/or passive income can provide enough income to cover your lifestyle expenses.”
For some of you, that may seem like an impossible dream. I’d argue that it isn’t, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about. Because the basic steps of building a workable financial plan are the same basic steps to reach financial independence.
Spencer covers establishing your financial foundation, investing while in the military, and military-unique considerations such as deployments and the Blended Retirement System. It is an easy read, just over 100 pages, and I finished it in an afternoon.
Who The Military Money Manual Is Not For
Well, obviously there isn’t anyone who wouldn’t gain something from this book. But, as the opposite of above, it’s probably not going to be the first choice of someone who is proficient in the basics of personal finance, understands their Blended Retirement System, and can spell out a good strategy to take advantage of deployment tax and savings opportunities.
