Welp, I’ve (finally) learned how to edit video enough to make a video that starts and ends at the right place. In this video, I talk to Doug Nordman about the military’s new Blended Retirement System (BRS). Doug is the author of The Military Guide to Financial Independence and Early Retirement, the founder of The Military Guide blog, and a generally smart and helpful guy to have in your circle of friends.
Doug’s also contributing to this month’s #BRSBlitz, where personal finance and military bloggers are trying to make sure that every eligible service member understands BRS so they can make an educated decision before the 31 December 2018 deadline. You can find more #BRSBlitz material by searching for the hashtag on Twitter or checking out my list, 50+ Places To Learn About The Military’s New Blended Retirement System (BRS).
As you can see, Doug and I are in favor of BRS for most people who are eligible to choose between the military’s two different retirement systems. I encourage you to use the resources listed above to learn everything about BRS, and then make the right choice for you. Failing to choose something by 31 December 2018 means that you’ll be locked into the old, legacy retirement system. If that’s your choice, great, but don’t let your decision be made because you didn’t do anything!
If you have any questions about anything we’ve talked about in this video, please ask in the comments or join the conversation in the Military Money Questions and Answers Facebook group. We’ve got a whole circle of experts on tap to help you with even the zaniest of queries.
This was filmed at FINCON, the premier money and media conference, in September. I have several more videos from FINCON and I look forward to getting them edited and out to you.
