April is Military Saves Month, and while I follow along all year long, it’s time for a post just about the awesome organization that is Military Saves, and how this program can help you accomplish your financial goals.
There are many quotes about the value of the people and information you share your time with, quotes like this one from Chris Hardwick: “If you wish to achieve any success in this life, do your best to surround yourself with an orgy of good choices.” And these quotes are true – it’s hard to be successful if you surround yourself with people or things that support bad choices. And this is where Military Saves is such a huge help. The Military Saves program “uses the principles of behavioral economics and social marketing to change savings behavior and motivate action.” It’s a simple and straightforward way to surround yourself with people and ideas that help you make good choices. Did I mention simple?
The way it works is that you take the Military Saves pledge, and then you receive emails or text messages that are semi-customized to the savings goal you identified. It’s the 2021 version of surrounding yourself with great people! You can sign up to take the Military Saves pledge online (using a civilian email address), or you can text “MilitarySaves” to 877877 to get started. Once they gather basic demographic data (for research purposes), you’ll be asked to identify your savings goal, then how much you plan to save each month to reach that goal.
- Emergency Fund
- Investment Savings
- Vacation or Special Event
- Large Purchase
- Debt Repayment
- Transition Fund
- General Savings
In addition to the encouraging reminders, you can also access all of the Military Saves material at their website, and watch their archive of interviews and conversations at the Military Saves Facebook page. It’s a great way to build up your “can do” spirit – and we all know that attitude is so important.
You’ll also get access to a free FICO credit score! You have to use a .mil email address, but I’ve been told that you can use the same email address for more than one person – i.e. two spouses.
Taking the Military Saves pledge won’t suddenly help you make more money, but it can help you develop the mindset you need to make the most of the money you have. Y’all know I am ALL. ABOUT. THAT. So check it out, take the Pledge, and get saving.
Let me know what you’re saving for in the comments. I’m saving for a bathroom remodel!
