Looking for a discount on Microsoft Office? There are two deals available to military members, depending on what you want and need, and several low-cost options available to everyone.
If you’re not a heavy Office user, the single computer version of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 or Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 is a steal at just $9.95. You have to register for the program with a .mil email address, and your code will be sent to that address. However, you can take the code home and install the program on whatever computer you desire. This is a one-time cost, but your Office software won’t get improvements as they come out.
This software includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher, InfoPath, and Lync – that’s everything.
Multiple Devices, Always Upgraded
If you have multiple devices, are looking for the freshest versions, and want online storage capability, the Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium Military Appreciation Edition is available through AAFES and the NEX for $69.99 per year. This is a subscription-based service, so you have to continue to purchase it again every year.
This subscription includes the same software as the Office Professional Plus 2013 bundle, but it can be used on five computers, five tablets AND five phones. Shazaam! It also includes online storage, which can be great thing if you tend to work on multiple computers or randomly log-in from the library or your best friend’s house.
Totally Free, Online Only
Did you know the Microsoft offers limited versions of their most popular software online, for free? The main catch is that you have to use them online. I haven’t used this yet, so let me know your reviews!
There are a lot of free alternatives to Microsoft Office, meaning that you don’t have to use the brand-name software to fulfill your office software needs. In most cases, these options are fully-compatible with Microsoft products. Though it is an UK-based site, MoneySavingExpert’s comprehensive list of free alternatives to the most popular office software products is the best I’ve found, and they are all available for use worldwide.* *to the best of my knowledge
Office software can be expensive if you run out and buy things without researching the alternatives. I’d much rather use a free option if it will meet my needs. I challenge you to explore the options before your next software purchase.
