Okay, okay – don’t shoot me. I know Gloria Steinem brings out strong feelings in people. It’s her quote that I like:
“The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.”
How true is that, especially when it comes to money? Very few people like the truth about their financial habits, because it is so easy to focus on all the things you’ve messed up. However, you’re never going to move past your bad financial decisions if you don’t find them and acknowledge them.
Every time I objectively assess our family’s spending, I find areas of waste and silliness. And sometimes it pisses me off. But eventually, knowing what is going on will help me either a) decide that these are expenses that are important, or b) find a way to cut back on those expenses. And isn’t that the point of reviewing your spending? We do it to make sure that we are spending money in ways that reflect the things that are important to us.
