Tricare beneficiaries, rejoice! Tricare, through their contractors Humana and Health Net Federal Services, are now offering telehealth through two different services, Dr+ on Demand and Telemynd . I am so excited about this, I can’t even explain. Finding health care can be challenging enough under the best of circumstances, and the current pandemic is far from the best of circumstances. Dr+ on Demand offers on-demand services, and Telemynd offers appointments.
And, for right now, due to the COVID-19 stateside public health emergency, there are zero copays or cost-shares for telemedicine care. This may change at any time.
Note: These services are not authorized for Active Duty Service Members without a referral.
Dr+ on Demand
On-demand services include:
Urgent care, including: colds and flu, allergies, minor injuries, skin conditions, and prescription refills. They can also order lab work.
Mental health services for conditions such as anxiety, trauma, addiction, and others.
The website says: “TRICARE Prime active duty family members and retirees do not need a referral or authorization.” I’m guessing that it doesn’t mention Tricare Select because they don’t need an authorization anyway?

Telemynd
Both Humana Military and Health Net Federal Services are also offering mental health care through Telemynd. This includes:
Therapy, including psychotherapy, talk therapy, or a combination of different approaches,
AND!!!!
Psychiatry! Including medication management.
Seriously, this is such a big deal for people who struggle to find mental health care, especially during COVID.
There is, however, something that’s a little confusing…It says that there is no need for referrals for Tricare Prime members. It does not mention Tricare Select members. To the best of my knowledge, no one needs referrals for mental health care. I will look into this, but be sure to ask.

I am cautiously optimistic that the current situation is going to make telehealth more accessible to people into the future. Some things need to be done in person, but telehealth can help provide services to more people with less inconvenience and even lower costs. This is a great change!
